BETHEL Last week, selectmen agreed to extend outdoor seating for area businesses until November 1.
Brian Simpson, who owns Butcher Burger restaurant, spoke on behalf of other businesses requesting for an extension, including Steam Mill Brewing and the Modern Barn.
Both Steam Mill and Modern Barn had employees or owners were present at the meeting.
Simpson said he thinks most people in the community feel safe and noted that no one at the meeting was masked, but that many people from away do not feel as comfortable, yet.
“A lot of the tourists coming into our state do not feel [as safe],” Simpson said. “They are still nervous.”

Samson’s Gym in Eastleigh closed its doors for good following a kidnapping scandal. The boarded-up site in Chamberlayne Road which has stood empty since 2018 was set to be knocked down to make way for a new development. However, efforts are now underway to get the iconic former dairy recognised as a listed building. Eastleigh residents have banded together and are calling for it to be listed as a community asset. The Gym Improvement Group (GIG), which was set up soon after the demolition plans were announced, stresses the historical significance of the venue. The group argues that the old dairy could be used to house an “expanded Eastleigh Museum” or even community events.
A council spokesperson said: “Historic England has informed us that they have received a request asking them to review the former Samson’s Gym building, we will of course assist Heritage England with any information they need.” Sam Jordan, an Eastleigh Labour campaigner said he is in support of the attempt to list the building. He said: “This is a building that’s been here longer than the airport. It might look hideous at the moment but this is an old building with a lot of history and it would be a shame to smash it up.” Gym Improvement Group (GIG), a community group that was started after the building was confirmed for demolition, also welcomed the news.
