The proclamation offered “a deep and sincere expression of apology and regret for the pain and loss stemming from this time and a sincere commitment to work toward better outcomes in all we do moving forward.”
Hattie Whitehead, who was a child when her parents lost their home in Linnentown, said she appreciated the mayor s proclamation.
“I felt good, as did all of the first descendants. This has been a long time coming, but the healing has started,” she said. “We appreciate what Mayor Girtz has done to work for atonement, which led to the apology for what occurred. It has promoted healing, so I’m really thankful he was able to do that.”
