Colorado is losing its most iconic asset: nature. The outdoors have always been central to our state’s identity. And today, as Coloradans escape the dangers of COVID-19 by heading to community parks, wilderness areas, and everything in between, it is clear that we must act decisively to protect our lands and water.
Thankfully, there is an emerging, science-based international goal the “Global Deal for Nature” that humanity should strive for. We must conserve half of the lands, waters, and oceans of Earth by 2050 to address the climate and nature crises, slow the rate of extinction, and avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To deliver on this deal, we must accelerate the pace and scale of conservation by protecting at least 30 percent of the planet by 2030
As President Joe Biden s administration Wednesday provided more details about sweeping reforms to curb pollution from fossil fuels, reaction came quickly in the form of criticism, praise and at least one lawsuit.
Colorado oil and gas industry representatives warned of pending severe job losses in the state while environmental groups and Gov. Jared Polis praised the new rules as appropriately aggressive.
The Western Energy Alliance announced it had filed a lawsuit “challenging President Joe Biden’s executive order banning oil and natural gas leasing on federal public lands.”
The complaint, filed in U.S. District Court in Wyoming, alleges Biden “exceeded his presidential authority” and that the federal lands permit hiatus constitutes “a violation of the Mineral Leasing Act, National Environmental Policy Act and the Federal Lands Policy and Management Act.”

“In a state known for its mountains, rivers and scenic beauty, the slow but persistent loss of nature threatens life as we know it in the Centennial State.”
That’s according to a recent report, Colorado’s “Pathways to 30x30,” a joint project of Conservation Colorado and Western Resource Advocates. The report offers warnings about the future of Colorado’s natural environment and the action we must take to ensure we don’t lose our most iconic asset: nature.
