Man gets 15 years Eastern District Court for gun, sex offenses
Staff reports
Firearm and sex offenses land a Plano man in the Eastern District of Texas courts this week.
Wayne Edward Bearden, 40, pleaded guilty on Dec. 4, 2019 to being a felon in possession of firearms and to coercion, enticement and aiding and abetting. He was sentenced to a total term of imprisonment of 180 months by U.S. District Judge Amos L. Mazzant this week.
“Today’s sentence takes a dangerous man off the street, and will bring a measure of closure and comfort to those he victimized,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei in a news release. “While this case began as a firearms investigation, due the excellent work of our federal and local law enforcement partners we were able to uncover – and dismantle – a commercial sex trafficking operation.”
YOUNGSTOWN Youngstown Police Department Chief Carl Davis announced the launch of Operation Steel Penguins today (April 27).
The operation will add another layer to enforcement efforts of the department to reduce violence and remove guns from the streets.
Davis said the initiative will focus on criminals in the community who are not permitted to carry guns but continue to possess them. The operation will focus on areas in the city where gunfire and arrests for firearms are most prevalent, he said.
People found violating the law will be referred to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for prosecution under federal law, Davis said.
The defendant, 57-year-old Thomas Asa Harbarger, was sentenced on Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Rodney Gilstrap.
âWe are proud to work with our state and local partners to protect the public and ensure the safety of our community,â Acting U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei said in a statement.
âThanks to the diligence and quick thinking of the Texas State Trooper in this case, a dangerous criminal is off the street,â he said.
A federal jury, in November, found Harbarger guilty of knowingly possessing a destructive device â an improvised explosive bomb â which was not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.
