Ziggy Marley will receive an honourary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Medgar Evers College on June 3.
College President Patricia Ramsey will confer the honourary degree to Marley during a commencement ceremony honouring the College’s classes of 2020 and 2021.
Marley, the eldest son of reggae legend Bob Marley and Rita Marley, is an eight-time Grammy winner, Emmy winner, activist and humanitarian.
He founded the U.R.G.E. (Unlimited. Resources. Giving. Enlightenment.) charity. It works to improve the lives of children through educational, health and environmental efforts to improve their communities.
In 2020, Marley received the Black Press of America’s prestigious Global Icon Achievement Award, and in 2017 he became the first reggae artist to win the George and Ira Gershwin Award for Lifetime Musical Achievement.
Austin Head, an activist in the LGBTQ community and local progressive politics in Phoenix, died unexpectedly on April 8 at his home in Hollywood, California. He was 37.
Head was born on Dec. 11, 1983, in Phoenix to Jo Ramsey and Bill Head. He was a strong advocate for those in the HIV and the LGBTQ communities. He lived a rather adventurous life pursuing his acting career in New York City and Hollywood.
The cause of his death is unknown.
On Nov. 9, 2012, while Head was in Phoenix working as a DJ, he was assaulted by two men as he walked down Central Avenue. The men attacked both Head and his friend while yelling homophobic slurs.
CUNY named Dr. Patricia Ramsey as the sixth president of Medgar Evers College on March 22. She will be the first woman to be president of the college.
Ramsey, whose appointment is effective May 1, is an educator with a record of experience as a leader at historically Black colleges and universities, known as HBCUs.
Previously, Ramsey served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at the oldest degree-granting HBCU in the United States, Pennsylvania’s Lincoln University.
Her career began as a biology professor and since then has obtained more than 30 years of experience as a scientist, scholar and student-focused leader at universities in Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina.

A woman is hoping to unearth a mystery man’s identity after she discovered his picture in a frame she purchased from a charity shop. Fiona Walker-Quilliam, from Kendal, bought an old picture frame from the Age Concern Warehouse in Kendal before lockdown. Returning home she soon found two pictures within the frame, including one of an unnamed man and another of a woman. The only clue came from a note with the words ‘Blackstone NY.’ Ms Quilliam soon found the subject of the other picture was a woman called Patricia Ramsey, but the second of the man still eludes her.
