One of Mayor Chokwe Lumumba’s opponents for office is now a city employee. Tuesday the Jackson City Council voted to appoint former mayoral candidate Patty Patterson a part-time deputy clerk for the city council. The motion was brought to the council by ward 5 city councilmen Vernon Hartley. Patterson says the appointment is an honor and pledged her full support to the council, the mayor and the citizens of Jackson.

Jackson residents and city councilmembers have differing opinions about whether National Guard troops should be activated to stem record violence in the city, but agree more must be done solve the issue.
Councilman Aaron Banks said he favors additional presence from federal agencies, such as the FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Drug Enforcement Agency, but opposes federal troops on the streets of Jackson. Do we need federal help? Yes. But I do not want to see tanks and other federalized units going up and down the streets of Jackson, Banks said. We need a presence. I don t think it is an armed occupation. If there are other things we can ask for at the federal level, I m willing to hear those options.
The margin of victory means Lumumba will head straight to the general election on June 8.
He will now face Jason Wells, who won the Republican primary, and three Independent candidates Shafeqah BigMama Lodree, Charlotte Reeves and Les Tannehill.
Lumumba, who is seeking a second term, beat out fellow Democratic candidates Patty Patterson, a longtime community organizer and activist, and Ken Wilson, a former Jackson firefighter.
The incumbent mayor nabbed just over 69% of the total vote, or 13,773 of the 19,887 votes cast for the three mayoral candidates.
Wilson finished with 3,691 votes and Patterson secured 2,423 votes.
In the Republican primary, Wells defeated Downing with a winning margin of 69%. Wells received 297 votes to Downing s 105 votes.
