ISLAMABAD, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) Over 37 percent brick kilns in Pakistan s east Punjab province have been shifted to eco-friendly zig-zag technology while the remaining have been sealed till they adopt the new method, an official with the Environment Protection Department in Pakistan s east Punjab province said.
The province has a total of 8,554 kilns out of which 3,203 have already adopted the new technology or are in the process of conversion, while the remaining 5,351 will be allowed to resume operations when they confirm their conversion, Naseem ur Rehman, the official, told Xinhua on Tuesday. Many cities of Punjab face serious smog usually in winter, and brick kilns having even more emissions than some of the factories are one of the major factors blamed for air pollution. So we closed all kilns which did not have zig-zag technology in October, following which a quick shift to the new technology has been witnessed, and we are hopeful that the remaining kilns
