Mayor of Knighton suspended over swearword-filled outburst

1/1 THE Mayor of Knighton has been suspended for six months as a councillor after he was found guilty of several serious breaches of the Town Council’s Code of Conduct. A hearing heard that Cllr Nick Johns stood up in a public meeting shortly before the coronavirus pandemic, and launched into foul-mouthed abuse at a number of people in attendance. Powys Council’s standards sub-committee met on Thursday, May 27 to hear the case against Cllr Johns, and heard that the incident occurred during a meeting at Knighton Community Centre to discuss the town’s response to the pandemic on March 18, 2020.

£80,000 consultants to drive £110m Mid Wales Growth Deal

Consultants are to be brought in at a cost of £80,000 to help drive forward the planned £110 million Mid Wales Growth Deal. At a meeting of the Growing Mid Wales Board on Wednesday, May 27, members were told that £80,000 had been earmarked to appoint consultants. Mid Wales Growth Deal, Strategic manager Carwyn Jones-Evans, explained that other growth deals had used expert help to get over the line. Mr Jones-Evans said: “To date we have largely relied on officer teams from both Powys and Ceredigion economic development teams. “To conclude the deal in as short a time as possible it’s become clear we would need to bring in additional capacity.

The 35 year old who appears in the Channel 4 show Countdown, says she was Television presenter Rachel Riley has lost the latest round of a libel battle with a Powys political blogger and Jeremy Corbyn supporter over an article which alleged that she engaged in a “campaign of online abuse and harassment” against a teenager on Twitter. Ms Riley, 35, the numbers expert on the Channel 4 show Countdown, sued Mike Sivier after he published an article on his website Vox Political in January 2019 with the headline: “Serial abuser Rachel Riley to receive ‘extra protection’ – on grounds that she is receiving abuse”.

Powys Council set to back Caersws crematorium plan

PLANNERS are set to give their backing to a new crematorium being built in Powys – but the final say on the plans could yet be given to the Welsh Government. Powys Crematorium Ltd wants to build a new crematorium on a 13.66-hectare site at Ael Y Bryn between Caersws and Aberhafesp. The application will come before a Powys Council planning committee meeting on Thursday, with officers recommending the panel backs the proposed project. But even that would only be a recommendation for now, with the Welsh Government still to decide whether to call the plans in. Should it decide not to, the decision made on Thursday would become binding.
