The council has a new frontline security base in Old Leigh to enhance police visibility in the area, with the community safety team supported by two ambulances from today until Monday. There will also be larger bins in place across the borough with more litter picking and bin emptying taking place in the borough s green spaces.

17-year-old arrested on suspicion of the murder of Luke Bellfield rebailed A 17-year-old boy arrested on suspicion of the murder of Luke Bellfield has been rebailed to June 1. The teen was arrested on suspicion of murder on March 1 but was later released on conditional bail on March 26. Initially, he was bailed until May 24. Now, police have bailed him again until June 1 while enquiries continue. Essex Police launched a murder investigation after 18-year-old Luke died following an attack near the Peterboat in Old Leigh last month. A post mortem examination found Luke died as a result of a single stab wound to the heart.
As violent crimes and gangs continue to plague south Essex, a former teenage gang member has spoken out on going from a street dealer to a confident rugby player. The teenager is urging others to seek help and escape from gang culture after he was left feeling like he had no way out and “just wanted to feel happy again”. Alex, not his real name, was initially enticed by a gang into storing cannabis and selling it on the streets after he lost someone close to him. He is sharing his story after Essex police secured an injunction against 15 teenagers from two gangs - the Leigh lot and O Block.
