Tri-Town officials mull over enrollment study

As enrollment declines in the Old Rochester Regional School District, Tri-Town officials at a July 13 joint meeting of Marion and Mattapoisett’s Select Boards and Rochester’s Board of Selectmen called for an enrollment study on the OR high school and junior high. Marion Select Board member John Waterman said that a study could help the towns and district “to manage or better control” the cost of schooling long-term. Marion Town Administrator Jay McGrail noted that he and Superintendent Mike Nelson are already working on it, and that he has a call with the UMass Boston Collins Center for Public Management later this week.

Crisafulli has over 19 years of experience as a public school administrator and 10 years working in community mental health and social services. He most recently served as the principal of Whately Elementary School in Whately from 2009 to 2018. Prior to that, he served as assistant principal of Deerfield Elementary School and director of the Frontier Transitional Education Program at Frontier Regional High School in South Deerfield. Outside of education, Crisafulli held several positions with the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children in Holyoke. Nelson issued the following statement Wednesday regarding an investigation into racist remarks written on a school bathroom wall: “The Old Rochester Regional School District is investigating after racist remarks and racial epithets were found written on a bathroom wall inside the ORR Junior High School. “On Monday, May 17, school administrators were notified by a student about the racist vandalism. An investigation was immediately launched by school officials and the district s School Resource Officer is assisting with the investigation.

May 19, 2021 The Old Rochester Regional School District is investigating racist remarks and racial epithets that were found written on a bathroom wall inside the OR Junior High School. According to the district, school administrators were notified by a student about the vandalism on May 17. The district launched an investigation into the vandalism, assisted by the school resource officer. The vandalism has been removed and the investigation is ongoing. This type of behavior is completely unacceptable and disgusting, Superintendent Nelson said. We want to foster an environment at all of our schools that is accepting and inclusive of all students. We are taking this issue extremely seriously and any students found to be involved in this incident will face appropriate actions within the district and with the police. With that said, I would also like to commend the student who found these hateful messages and reported it to an adult.
