The following are excerpts from the Maynard police log from Friday, April 23, to Thursday, April 29. The log is public record and available for review. All persons are presumed innocent unless found guilty in a court of law.
Friday, April 23
8:02 a.m.: A trash bag was reported causing a hazard in the roadway at Parker Street and Old Marlboro Road.
11:47 a.m.: A caller reported someone riding a dirt bike on the rail trail in the area of Main Street. An officer located the youth in the area of Maynard Pizza House and confirmed it was a child on an electric bike with his father. No other issues were found.

Imagine that you sacrificed your life in the Civil War, but your name is lost to history, including on your town’s Civil War Memorial. This is the story of George Washington Dugan. Born in 1819 to Thomas and Jennie Dugan, there was no way to know that George and his mother would become household names in the historic Town of Concord. Sometimes, it takes a while for the public to be informed. In this case, it will be 158 years to complete the tale.
The 54th Massachusetts was an infantry regiment that saw extensive service in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The unit was the second African-American regiment organized in the northern states during the Civil War. General recruitment of African Americans for service in the Union Army was authorized by the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Lincoln in 1863. Secretary of War Edwin M. The East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project will be conducting a helicopter application of the biological larvicide, Bti, to control mosquito larvae over large wetland areas in Maynard, between April 19 and April 30. Wetlands currently being evaluated for this application are located near George Road, Old Marlboro Road and Rockland Avenue.
The Bti will be applied in a granular formulation by a helicopter flying low directly over the wetlands. Residents do not need to take any special precautions for this application.
The material to be applied Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis) is a natural bacterium found in soil. The EPA classifies Bti as a relatively non-toxic pesticide. Bti is considered a target selective and environmentally compatible pesticide that affects mosquito larvae and a few closely related aquatic insects in the fly family. CONCORD During Monday s virtual meeting of the Select Board, the board unanimously approved the installation of the George W. Dugan tablet at the base of Concord s Civil War Monument.
According to Concord resident and historian Rick Frese, it will be embedded in the existing pavers and cobblestones.
Cemetery Supervisor Tish Hopkins and Frese have collaborated on this project, an initiative that dates back to Frese’s initial petition to the Select Board in August 2014.
Hopkins and the bronze company designed the tablet and Frese wrote the inscription.
Who is George Dugan?
Almost two years into the war, on Feb. 16, 1863, an advertisement appeared in the Boston Journal recruiting “good men of African descent” to join the newly formed 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first Black regiment in the Civil War, according to Frese.
