El Centro Hispano Launches Fundraiser for Victims of Carrboro Apartment Fire

El Centro Hispano Launches Fundraiser for Victims of Carrboro Apartment Fire The local nonprofit El Centro Hispano recently launched a fundraiser to aid several Carrboro residents displaced by a recent fire. After a severe fire broke out at the Poplar Place apartment complex early Monday morning, fire officials deemed 20 units in the damaged building uninhabitable. The blaze left 22 residents of the complex, located off Old Fayetteville Road, largely displaced. El Centro Hispano, which advocates for equity and inclusion of the Hispanic and Latino community in the Triangle, saw one of its key leaders affected by the fire. President and CEO Eliazar Posada revealed on Facebook he was the lone victim transported to the hospital on Monday and said the fire left him with little belongings.

The Carrboro Fire Department reported the roof collapsed amid its crews’ initial response, leading them to upgrade the blaze to a two-alarm fire and call more emergency services.

Leland, Southport and more are set to get breweries

Elsewhere in Leland, the Brunswick Beer & Cider Company was planned for Brunswick Forest.  “Obviously COVID caused some major setbacks for the restaurant and craft beer community but we still plan to move forward,” said Jud Watkins, of Wrightsville Beach Brewery, who wants to add a second location in Brunswick.   “We are excited as ever to expand into Leland and hope to have a construction timeline announced relatively soon,” he said.   The concept includes a brewery, cidery, onsite restaurant, bar and event venue.  McDonald said that Cape Side will be built on a taproom model, with a large beer garden and music venue   modeled on the kinds of places he visited in the Charleston and Isle of Palms areas. Beers will be lighter styles, he said.
