“It’s been a roller coaster,” admitted the left-hander from Oban, who was 12th on his Masters debut at Augusta National in April.
“Did I expect to be here at this point? No. We had a plan in place and we seemed to pick it off earlier than expected, but we’re here now and we’re competing and that’s all that I can ask for.
“I fully expect to compete every week I’m out playing, expectations are high within myself.”
Europe’s Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harrington has already praised MacIntyre’s fighting qualities and with qualifying points doubled from this week onwards, MacIntyre and Willett are among those hoping to boost their chances of making the team for Whistling Straits.
“As a kid you don’t really grow up dreaming of being a tournament host, but once I saw all the other guys that have had the opportunity I thought it would be cool if the Tour went back to Gran Canaria, so I’m really loving it this week,” Cabrera Bello said.
“It’s a very nice feeling because you look back on your career and feel like, ‘OK maybe I’ve done one or two things right’.
“Last year wasn’t my best year but it was such a tricky year that I don’t want to draw any extreme conclusions from that. This year I have played some events better, I feel my game is coming back.
The United States Golf Association today announced that Newport Country Club will host the 44th U.S. Senior Open Championship. The historic venue was originally scheduled to be the host site of the 2020 championship, but it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This will be the fifth USGA championship to be held at Newport Country Club, which hosted the inaugural U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur championships in 1895. The dates of the U.S. Senior Open are June 27-30, 2024.
“Newport Country Club and the USGA have a long, rich history that dates to the club’s beginnings as a founding member club of the Association, and we are more than pleased to continue this relationship as we progress through these challenging times,” said John Bodenhamer, USGA senior managing director, Championships. “We know that the region and community will be fully supportive of the U.S. Senior Open, senior golf’s most prestigious championship.”

Former world number one Martin Kaymer has not given up hope of making this year’s Ryder Cup team, despite conceding his game is currently not good enough for the PGA Tour.
Kaymer famously secured the point which ensured Europe would retain the Ryder Cup following the ‘Miracle at Medinah’ in 2012 and won his second major title at the US Open in 2014.
The 36-year-old has not tasted victory since his wire-to-wire success at Pinehurst, blowing a 10-shot lead in the final round in Abu Dhabi in January 2015 and almost dropping out of the world’s top 200 before enjoying an improvement in form with six top-10 finishes last season.
