It was Aug. 8, 2008, the opening day of the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing. A’ja Wilson was celebrating her 12th birthday with an Olympic-themed party to watch the U.S. women’s basketball team play. That legendary squad included the likes of Seimone Augustus, Sue Bird, Tamika Catchings, Sylvia Fowles, Lisa Leslie, Candace Parker and Diana Taurasi.
“This was my first time seeing WNBA players, and I did not understand how much it really meant to watch women play the game so well and make it look easy,” says Wilson. “I remember saying, ‘These women are badass. They are going after it. That’s how I want to be.’ ”

As the spring season of high school varsity football comes to a close, this week s 49ers PREP High School Player of the Week presented by U.S. Bank is awarded to senior defensive end Josh Baughman for his performance against the Milpitas Trojans.
Baughman led the Santa Clara defense with two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, one sack and six tackles in the win for the Bruins on Friday night. It was a great send-off for the senior lineman and the Santa Clara senior class.

As the delayed season of high school varsity football continues, this week s 49ers PREP High School Player of the Week presented by U.S. Bank is awarded to junior linebacker and tight end Jake Ripp for his multi-faceted performance against the Wilcox Chargers.
Ripp led the Los Gatos defense with 23 tackles in the come-from-behind win on Friday night. Also the starting tight end, he made some huge catches that helped propel the Los Gatos come back. Jake is never off the field, besides of few special teams plays. He is a great effort player, said LGHS head coach Mark Krail. Jake was instrumental in slowing down the Wilcox inside run. He was in the middle of some big stops to help get us back in the game.
