- Did you ever thumb through the Guinness Book of World Records as a kid, awed by the amazing feats? This year, families can help set records in ways that may not make headlines, but will make a difference.
This January 24-30, families and educators will participate in America s largest annual celebration of K-12 school choices. During National School Choice Week, millions of students, teachers, parents, and community leaders will celebrate the importance of education and discuss what options they hope to see in the future and you re invited to join.
Most years, these conversations take place at rallies, student showcases, multi-school fairs, and other huge, in-person community events. This year, school choice celebrants have shown their adaptability in light of COVID-19, planning drive-in movie nights, virtual conferences, car parades, and other safe activities that are diverse and unique, just as students are.
Parson has shown increasing irritation in recent weeks toward anyone who dares challenge his leadership. He blasted House Speaker Rob Vescovo for shutting down the House chamber during a coronavirus outbreak among members, forcing Parson to deliver his State of the State speech in the Senate chamber instead. He blasts news media coverage of his pandemic response, as if reporting the facts about coronavirus cases and maskless Parson campaign events constitutes bias against him.
But the facts speak for themselves. Parson refused to lead in the early days of the pandemic and instead punted authority to local officials for issuing unpopular shutdown orders and restrictions. He let them take the heat while he focused on his election campaign. Parson pooh-poohed the significance of mass gatherings and maskless parties like the superspreader event at a Lake of the Ozarks swimming pool/bar that garnered national headlines.

RALEIGH â North Carolinaâs lawmakers are moving to advance school choice.
Republicans on Thursday, Jan. 28, introduced House Bill 32, Equity in Opportunity Act, to reform the Opportunity Scholarship program. The bill would expand low-income studentsâ access to scholarships, integrate state funding, streamline the program for students with special needs, and boost outreach to low-income families.
The push to expand access to Opportunity Scholarships comes during national School Choice Week.
The Opportunity Scholarship program offers up to $4,200 to help low-income families attend the private school of their choice. Republicans say the learning loss caused by the coronavirus pandemic and school shutdowns has made parental school choice a priority for the session.
