Lume Cannabis is making a big statement with its investment in the small community. Nate Adkins is a Launch Team Leader for Lume Cannabis Co. “Getting the license is the big thing. And a big thing for us is we like to get licenses in cities that welcome us and cities that want us there. And we felt that with Kalkaska.”
Gretchen Whitmer
Earlier this year, I highlighted the extraordinary opportunity we had with our state budget surplus and federal relief dollars to close the funding gap between schools in Michigan and help our kids and educators thrive as we emerge from the pandemic. Recently, the Legislature came to the table, and this week I signed a bipartisan bill making historic investments in Michigan’s kids without raising taxes.
Together, we are closing the funding gap between schools, expanding early childhood education for low- and middle-income families, and providing resources for districts to hire more counselors, nurses, and social workers. By making these critical investments in our kids, from preschool through graduation, we are setting up a generation of Michiganders for success.

Gov. Whitmer Signs Historical K-12 Education Budget
July 13, 2021
Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the largest state education budget in history Tuesday, $17.1 billion dollars. For the first time in three decades, creating an even playing field for all schools.
For 27 years, since 1994, the state has promised to close the funding gap between the highest funded schools and the lowest funded schools. They have taken baby steps but they haven’t gotten close, this year they closed the gap.
“Every school has the same baseline funding of $8,700 per pupil and that is a huge win,” said Gov. Whitmer.
It’s been a long time coming but Michigan closed the gap, equal funding across the board for Michigan schools, the largest investment the state has made.
