Fountain Valley Regional respiratory therapists at epicenter of COVID-19 battle say they are burning out

Fountain Valley Regional Hospital & Medical Center respiratory therapists whose skills and training place them squarely in the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic are describing increasingly untenable work conditions as the facility struggles against its capacity to admit and treat COVID-19 patients. Concerned about urgent safety issues that have so far gone unaddressed as the patient census continues to rise, employees reached out to representatives from the National Union of Healthcare Workers to intervene on their behalf. “We had a call with therapists over the weekend, who said we need to sound the alarm,” said Barbara Lewis, NUHW’s Southern California hospital division director. “Our members see how bad it is right now. There needs to be a breakthrough because this is not sustainable.”

Fire strikes Hazle Twp home

Fire erupted at a Hazle Twp. home Saturday night, causing extensive damage. Firefighters were sent to 2538 Christine Road just before 7 p.m. after flames could be found coming from the rear of the bi-level building which is between Wedgewood Road and Beech Court in the Ridgewood section of the township. Flames were visible from a second story side rear window at 7 p.m. and a few minutes later they engulfed a rear portion of the roof sending heavy, thick smoke into the cold 20-degree night. Volunteer firefighters from Hazle Twp. Fire and Rescue set up their equipment and went to work after finding the flames lapping at the home.

On Consumerism: A funny thing happened before my operation

By Arthur Vidro Right after Election Day my right side started hurting badly. I eventually phoned for an appointment with a surgeon at Valley Regional Hospital who had operated on my other side in 2016 and warned me at the time that this might happen. I took the earliest available appointment, Dec. 3. That day, the doctor saw me, confirmed my fear, and we agreed on surgery as the smartest course. Usually this sort of surgery is scheduled a month or more in advance. But I was lucky. There was an opening just four days away. “Sign me up,” I said. Any wait would have been lengthy. The schedules of the hospital and of the surgeon precluded any other date in December.

An internist, Perras said he is scheduled to provide inpatient care next week. He was to be one of the first 95 front-line workers and local emergency medical service personnel slated to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in Windsor in the coming days. “When I get vaccinated, I’m hoping it pushes people who are on the fence to getting it too,” he said in a phone interview.
