Governor Gavin Newsom announced a partnership with the federal government May 25 to support California’s efforts to advance offshore wind energy development along the state’s north and central coasts. The partnership outlines plans to begin developing nearly 400 square miles of ocean off the Central Coast as early as 2022. Floating turbines would harness wind energy about 20 to 30 miles off the coast and then transfer it for use on shore. That potential offshore wind farm could bring up to three gigawatts of renewable energy to the state over the next 10 years. With another 1.6 gigawatts potentially being produced at another area identified up north, this could be enough total energy to power 1.6 million homes.
