Both the Valle Catholic High School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams found replacement games over the past weekend.
The Warriors met with mixed results as the boys downed Jefferson R-7, 69-58, on Saturday evening bouncing back from Friday’s 97-69 loss to Farmington.
The Valle Catholic girls also suffered a loss to the Knights, 49-27.
Under the circumstances, with poor roads and frigid temperatures, it was simply a blessing to play on back-to-back days inside the cozy confines of Valle’s main gymnasium.
“It was good to see our guys bounce back and get a win on Saturday,” Valle Catholic head boys’ basketball coach Tyler Search said. “I’m happy we came out ready to play, and won all four quarters.”

NEW MADRID For Valle Catholic High School wrestler Joseph Flieg, not being able to compete during the postseason last year has served as motivation.
That’s according Warrior head coach Jake Gegg.
Flieg, who transitioned from the 126- to 120-pound class this year, won both of his matches by fall this past Saturday earning a gold medal at his new weight.
“That was big for Joseph,” Gegg said. “He was motivated, and worked hard in the offseason. He had a good chance to qualify for state (last year).”
Flieg improved to 28-9 on the season, and he helped the Warriors to a third-place team finish at the Class 1 District 1 tournament at New Madrid County Central High School.

CEDAR HILL For three Ste. Genevieve High School girls’ wrestlers, it’s destination sectionals.
The Dragons’ Maggie Myracle (195-pound weight class), Izzy Basler (127) and Autumn Basler (117) all qualified for the Section 1 Meet set for St. Clair High School on Feb. 20.
“I thought we had a good chance of advancing at least half,” Ste. Genevieve head coach Jared Bonnell said. “I thought all of our girls wrestled tough. These athletes work so hard, and you hate to see their seasons end.”
Bonnell was especially proud of Autumn Basler, who has progressed through the past couple of weeks, gaining momentum while at the district meet at Northwest High School this past Saturday.

Protecting your own basketball court can become a cherished entity.
That’s what recently happened on a recent Saturday afternoon at Peggy J. Johnson Gymnasium and Peggy would have been proud of the Ste. Genevieve junior varsity boys’ basketball team.
The Dragons won their own “Old Settlement Tournament” on Jan. 23 under 10th-year coach Jonathan Robinson.
“When you have a week where you play six games in seven days, you find out the character of your team,” Robinson said.
“I thought we played good team basketball, guys accepted their roles and did the little things it takes to win,” the coach added.
