SEATTLE The University of Washington s Class of 2021 will have to celebrate their graduations virtually this June, marking the second year of pandemic-related disruptions to commencement ceremonies.
In an April 1 letter addressed to graduating students at the university s Seattle, Bothell and Tacoma campuses, UW President Ana Mari Cauce confirmed all sanctioned in-person college, school and department-level graduations would remain virtual, including the traditionally large ceremonies at Husky Stadium.
While Washington s Phase 3 guidelines allow for events at outdoor venues, capped at 25 percent capacity, university officials determined rising case counts and limited vaccination among university employees and students pose too much of a risk.
