Meet Walton graduate and Rhodes Scholar-elect, Sam Patterson

An east Cobb native has earned the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in England to expand and improve transportation. Sam Patterson, 21, a Walton High School graduate who is a senior at the University of Maryland Baltimore County will study how to make transportation economically and environmentally sustainable. Patterson plans to pursue a master’s degree in the University of Oxford’s Nature, Society and Environmental Governance program, focusing on the economics of transportation. Currently, he is studying for three bachelor’s degrees: math, statistics and economics. The 4.0 triple-degree student said economics is his central area of study, and he plans to get a Ph.D. in economics after graduate school, hoping to join Harvard’s doctorate program.

Minorities are more likely than whites to lack health insurance and have less access to health care. And some people of color may be more distrustful of the health care system. People of color are also more likely than whites to have underlying health conditions such as hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, and obesity that predispose them to complications from COVID-19.
