Thinking inside box? University of Toronto researchers find most CEOs are internal hires
When hiring a new chief executive officer, companies tend to draw from a surprisingly small pool of candidates – most of whom are insiders.
While it’s easier than ever for CEOs to move from one firm to another – leadership skills can be remarkably similar across firms – the majority of CEOs of companies in the S&P 500 index are actually current or former employees of the firm.
That’s according to research by Peter Cziraki, assistant professor of economics in the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Arts & Science, and Dirk Jenter, an associate professor at the London School of Economics.

Nearly 40 Black students from high schools in the Greater Toronto Area have been taking part in science workshops provided by science departments in the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Arts & Science.
The outreach program, called Pursue STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), began in March and will run until August. The online workshops cover a diversity of topics, including artificial intelligence, programming languages, number theory, vulcanism and other geological processes, spectroscopes and more.
It was developed through a partnership between the department of physics, U of T’s Office of Student Recruitment and the Lifelong Leadership Institute’s Leadership by Design program.
Architecture is a part of daily life that often gets overlooked.
From a simple doorknob to spectacular feats of engineering, such as the 430-metre Zhangjiajie skywalk bridge in China’s Hunan Province, the built environment reflects and responds to societies’ values.
It also raises questions about aesthetics, technology – and ethics.
In The Ethics of Architecture, Mark Kingwell, a professor of philosophy in the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Arts & Science, looks at architecture’s ethical implications and whether building designers should serve the community as well as clients. That includes exploring “the professional obligations of architects,” considerations in the field about the common good and the notion of architecture as a collective undertaking.
