On Wednesday, trustees voted to allow staff to begin working on contracts with championship organizers. Board approval was needed because the value of the contracts may exceed $5 million, the threshold at which a review is triggered. According to the university, the championships are the third-largest sporting event in the world and will draw in 2,000 athletes from more than 200 countries. The event was scheduled for this year but was postponed because of COVID-19. It’s also the first time the event will be held in the United States.
