EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Oregon Board of Trustees is moving forward with plans to host the World Athletics Championships in July 2022.
On Wednesday, trustees voted to allow staff to begin working on contracts with championship organizers. Board approval was needed because the value of the contracts may exceed $5 million, the threshold at which a review is triggered.
According to the university, the championships are the third-largest sporting event in the world and will draw in 2,000 athletes from more than 200 countries. The event was scheduled for this year but was postponed because of COVID-19. It’s also the first time the event will be held in the United States.
