Sask First Nations adopt app to help with mental, physical health

  SASKATOON Over a dozen First Nations bands in central Saskatchewan will receive mental and physical health assistance through a downloadable app. “First Nations communities are historically and disproportionately affected by trauma, depression, suicide and substance use, and our families are no longer prepared to wait,” said Big River First Nation Chief Jack Rayne. TryCycle is designed for people in treatment or awaiting treatment for substance use or mental health disorders. The app encourages users to check-in and connect with their health team. According to Apple app store, “Use of TryCycle is designed to increase engagement in treatment, allowing healthcare professionals to monitor behaviours and warnings signs of relapse, increasing compassionate support of patients.

The app digitally tethers clients to in-community nurses and mental health therapists.  It is geared toward enhancing health services, care and connection for those suffering from mental health issues, depression or addiction. The First Nations-led program is a collaboration between Big River First Nation, The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN,) Saskatchewan First Nations Veterans Association (SFNVA), and Indigenous Services Canada.

Woman concerned over mother s living conditions on Big River First Nation

  SASKATOON A woman is concerned about the living conditions of her 69-year-old mother, Betsy Bird, and the four foster children she s taking care of on Big River First Nation. Meagan Vivian says two years ago her mother’s house became overrun with bedbugs and cockroaches. She says Big River First Nation councillors fumigated the and promised $1,500 towards renovations. Bird’s family began renovating the house themselves, tearing out drywall and insulation, with the expectation the money would be used for repairs. “And then there was an election, new membership came in, and for some reason, it was ignored,” said Vivian, who claims the plumbing in the house no longer works. “My mom cannot live in that house like that any longer, especially with kids in care.”
