Expert sports commentators like Harold Abrahams (whose achievement in winning the 1924 Paris Olympics 100-metres gold inspired the 1982 Oscar award-winning movie “Chariots of Fire”) and the triple-jumper Jack Metcalfe (bronze medallist at the 1936 Berlin Games) had opined that Rebello would be unbeatable in the triple-jump event at the 1948 London Olympics. Sadly that was not to be.

Jack Metcalfe TRIBUTES have been paid to local accountant and lifelong supporter of Bury FC, Jack Metcalfe, who has died, aged 78, following a short illness. The former Bury Grammar School student founded his own accountancy practice Metcalfe and Co, originally based in Bolton Street before they moved to St Mary’s Place where the firm still operates from today. A Bury FC season ticket holder, Jack was an enthusiastic member of the Gigg Lane club’s Centenary Committee and was a member of Bury Acapeelers, a non-accompaniment singing group. Jack was also a staunch supporter of and volunteer with the East Lancashire Railway.
