I ve changed a few names in this weird story for legal reasons. In April 1966, a 21-year-old Tranmere man named Jack Blaney had a blazing row with his long-suffering girlfriend Babs Hughes in a Birkenhead pub. This time she threw her engagement ring at him and left. Jack was now homeless and penniless, as he d been staying with Babs at a bedsit in Clifton Park. Being too proud to sign on and too lazy to find a job, he d constantly sponged off his fiancée. Jack started asking the drinkers in the pub to have an arm wrestle with him; if they lost they bought him a drink, and if Jack lost he’d give them his former fiancée s engagement ring.
