Last weekend, in the immediate aftermath of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s May 13 announcement that fully vaccinated people can eschew masks and social distancing in most indoor and outdoor locations, we found that facial covering use in metro Denver remained surprisingly strong.
In the three major Greeley stores we visited a Home Depot, a King Soopers and a Walmart, all three of which allow fully vaccinated people to skip face coverings mask usage ranged from spotty to rare. And we observed a fascinating racial component: People of color were much more likely to don a face covering than were their white counterparts.

It’s a gubernatorial “turf and post” war over Weld County.
Over the past few weeks, regional interest has increased over “Weld County Wyoming,” an initiative to have the residents of Weld County, Colorado vote on the possibility of seceding from Colorado and becoming the 24
th county of Wyoming. The initiative’s Facebook has over five thousand likes and is seeking donations for their ballot initiative.
Now, both states’ governors have added their fuel to the fire – and it’s a little heated.
In a Feb. 1 radio interview with KOA, a Denver-based station, Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon suggested Weld County would be more than welcome.

Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon shared his support for Weld County, a rural Colorado county home to nearly 324,000 residents, efforts to secede from the state and join Wyoming on Monday. We would love that, Gordon said during an interview with local Colorado radio station KOA NewsRadio. From time to time states have said, Gosh we like what Wyoming is doing and so we d be happy.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis pushed back against Gordon s support, saying Weld County residents are proud to be a part of his state.

A controversial measure proposed by a Northern Colorado county that if passed, would make it a part of Wyoming has gained the support of our northern neighbors governor.
The measure was introduced in Weld County, Colorado, a county north of Denver and bordering Wyoming which is primarily known as being home to the city of Greeley. If passed, Weld County would secede from Colorado and become a county in the state of Wyoming instead.
The proposed measure is heavily politically motivated, as not only is Wyoming the least populated state in the United States, it is also heavily conservative in nature. Weld County is also heavily politically conservative largely due to the oil and gas as well as the beef-producing industries that account for a great amount of the county s monetary income and jobs.
Hands off Weld County, Polis said in a statement on social media.
Efforts for Weld County, which borders Wyoming s Laramie County, to join the Cowboy State are nothing new. Last year, Weld County Wyoming founder Todd Richards told Townsquare Media of Cheyenne that Wyoming is what Colorado once was.

During the Feb. 9, 2020 interview with KGAB s Doug Randall, Richards admitted making his dream is a reality won t be easy and likely will involve getting approval from Colorado, Wyoming and the U.S. Congress. But he said he thinks the rest of Colorado, with its increasingly progressive political orientation, will be glad to see us go.
