STALLHOLDERS were left counting the cost after gale force winds caused chaos on Burnley Market in 1965. Roofs were ripped off many of the stalls on the open market and several of the stalls were blown down in the November storm. Fortunately the stalls hadn’t been set up fully for the day so valuable stock wasn’t affected and no-one was hurt as the sheeting acted as giant sails dragging some of the metal frames of the stalls with them. The open market was a popular fixture in Burnley town centre with market day drawing in shoppers from a wide area.
