Southeastern Conference university presidents voted Thursday to invite Texas and Oklahoma to the league and create a 16-team powerhouse on the field and at the bank.
But how soon?
The latest step in a move that has potential to help reshape college sports came two days after Texas and Oklahoma requested to join the SEC in 2025. That’s when the schools’ media rights agreement with the Big 12 expires.
The SEC said its leaders voted unanimously to extend invitations to the Longhorns and Sooners and bring them into the conference effective July 1, 2025.

SEC schools vote to allow Oklahoma, Texas to join the league

Southeastern Conference university presidents voted to invite Texas and Oklahoma to join the league and create a 16-team powerhouse on the field and at the bank.
The latest step in a move that has potential to help reshape college sports came two days after Texas and Oklahoma requested to join the SEC in 2025. That’s when the schools’ media rights agreement with the Big 12 expires.
SEC leaders voted unanimously to extend an invitation, effective July 1, 2025. Now the process goes back to the schools. Texas and Oklahoma both have board of regents meetings schedule for Friday with conference affiliation on the agenda.’

It is no great secret that ESPN played a significant role in shepherding Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC, much as the sports broadcasting goliath in Bristol has its paws on many other moves in college sports. The Big 12 Conference and commissioner Bob Bowlsby are mad about it… but they now have to prove it in court.
With the SEC voting unanimously (even Texas A&M the vote was 14-0) to approve Texas and Oklahoma as new conference members on Thursday, the Big 12 faces a difficult set of choices, but the one easy choice is to do nothing.
Earlier this week, the Big 12 sent a cease and desist letter to ESPN, claiming that the network was directly involved in steering Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC. Bowlsby used the word “deception” in his comments about the matter, and he essentially made the case that ESPN engaged in collusion.
