AHMEDABAD: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was cruising to a landslide win in Gujarat rural local bodies polls on Tuesday.
The BJP won an overwhelming majority of seats of the municipalities, district panchayats and taluka panchayats which went to polls.
Even as counting was still on, the BJP had won or was leading in all the 31 district panchayats, 75 of the 81 municipalities and 196 of the 231 taluka panchayats for which voting was held on February 28.

The ruling BJP recorded a massive victory in the local body polls in Gujarat on Tuesday by winning clear majority in all 31 district panchayats as well as in 196 out of 231 taluka panchayats and 74 out of 81 municipalities. The Congress, the main opposition party in the state, won a clear majority in only one municipality and 18 taluka panchayats, while AIMIM and AAP also made their presence felt. In six municipalities and 15 taluka panchayats no party has got clear majority. The BJP s success followed its victory in all six municipal corporations where polls were held in the first phase of local elections on February 21.

× In the local body polls in Gujarat, the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) retained its dominant position with a thumping majority, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) made inroads into the BJP’s heartland by winning 42 seats across panchayats and municipalities.
The State Election Commission data up to 7 pm on Tuesday showed BJP winning 3,322 seats in Taluka Panchayats, 785 seats in district panchayats and 2,063 seats in municipalities. Independent candidates won 115, 3 and 172 seats respectively for the three civic bodies.
After its successful debut in Municipal Corporation elections in Surat, Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP surprised the political opponents by making further inroads into Gujarat villages.
