SCJH Cooks Work Brings In $1,000 For Community Cafe

Smith-Cotton High School senior Abby Bruce, the student director for Community Cafe, accepts a donation of $1,000 from the kitchen staff and administrators at Smith-Cotton Junior High, as well as members of the Sedalia 200 district s food service staff. The junior high kitchen staff made Valentine s Day cookies that were purchased by junior high staff members and students; all proceeds went to the cafe, which provides an evening meal free of charge five nights a week for those in need. Bruce said the donation is quite meaningful and shows that even in hard times like these, we can still make sure people can get a meal.

MARIE HOUSEL DABNER

Marie Housel Dabner, 101, of Sedalia, died Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at Carroll County Memorial Hospital in Carrollton. She was born August 25, 1919 in Sedalia, a daughter of the late Edward Glover and Maude C. Gordy Housel. On October 16, 1935 she was married to Melvin “Teddy” Dabner, who preceded her in death on March 22, 2008. Marie was raised and educated in Sedalia and attended Mark Twain and Smith-Cotton High School. She was the first girl to work for Interstate Studio from 1934 to 1943. Later she was a photographic color artist for Lehmer Studio, Classic Studio and McVey Studio. She taught a Photographic Oil class at State Fair Community College for 2 years.

S-C FBLA Students Earn 16 Medals At District

S-C FBLA Students Earn 16 Medals At District Smith-Cotton High School FBLA students earned 16 medals, including two first place finishes, in the District 10 competition, held virtually on Wednesday, Feb. 17, due to COVID-19 restrictions. Junior Gannon Perkins won the Public Speaking competition and was third in Accounting 1. Freshman Kush Patel was first in Word Processing and took fifth place in Intro to Financial Math. They will be joined by Regina Robinson (third, Intro to Business Communications) and Faith Johnson (fifth, Journalism) in the Missouri FBLA State Leadership Conference competitions, which will take place virtually in April. S-C FBLA Advisor Bryant Lazenby said: “I couldn t be more proud of this group of students. Participation in organizations took a hit this year due to COVID, but this group of young leaders were determined and that showed today. Each of these projects took place outside of class on the student s own time.:

Malacki Ehlers, a graduating senior at Smith-Cotton High School, has been named one of more than 4,500 candidates in the 2021 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The candidates were selected from nearly 3.6 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in the year 2021. Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors for their accomplishments in many areas: academic success, leadership, and service to school and community.
