• The Tuscaloosa City Commission chamber was packed with property owners protesting the rezoning of Northington campus from institutional to commercial. A proposed land swap between the University of Alabama and the state Mental Health Board hinged on the rezoning. The University wanted to obtain a block of land on University Boulevard in front of Bryce Hospital in exchange for the Northington property and a piece of land in Jefferson County. The rezoning was approved.
• Frank M. Moody was named chairman of the board of directors of the First National Bank and the bank’s chief executive officer. George Shirley was elevated from executive vice president to president, succeeding Moody.
