DARPA confirms role for Lockheed in LongShot Phase 1 - Unmanned Vehicles

US eyes an air-launched UAV capable of attacking targets from standoff range. Lockheed Martin has received a $7.83 million contract from DARPA for Phase 1 design work on the LongShot programme. This contract provides research, development and demonstration funds for the futuristic air-launched UAV that is envisaged to be capable of firing multiple air-to-air weapons from standoff range. Work will be completed by February 2022 at three US locations. Lockheed Martin is one of three US companies to receive LongShot Phase I contracts from DARPA, the others being General Atomics and Northrop Grumman. Ultimately, a full-scale air-launched demonstration system will be built that will be capable of controlled flight before, during, and after weapon ejection under operational conditions.
