After more than 14 months of life torn asunder by the pandemic, the holiday weekend brought no small measure of relief as Californians cautiously resumed doing the things they normally do, starting with barbecues and trips to the beach.
California now logs one of the lowest COVID-19 case rates of any state in the country, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Statewide, 1,057 people were hospitalized Monday with confirmed cases, a 23% drop from two weeks ago, according to data compiled by The Times.
Crowds pack the Santa Monica State Beach on Memorial Day as many people are eager to get out as the COVID-19 pandemic wanes.

The call came in just before 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 27, 1974.
“I believe there might be a dead person . on the beach . across from Ulloa Street, if you follow the street right down to the water,” the caller told a San Francisco police dispatcher. Didn’t give his name, just hung up.
Cops rushed down to Ocean Beach. Sprawled at the water’s edge, about to be washed out by the waves, was a man’s body. They dragged him back onto dry sand and took a close look. Seemed to be about 50 years old. Balding, heavy-set. Seventeen stab wounds, front and back, including on his hands he’d tried to fight off his killer.
SAN DIEGO
An arsonist set fires that burned a picnic bench, a pop-up tent and some equipment at the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery early Monday morning and police are investigating the blazes, officials said.
Two small fires were reported around 12:25 a.m. at the cemetery on 44th Street near C Street. There were no injuries.
“This was two small fires one was in a pop-up tent and picnic table and the other was some miscellaneous equipment next to a commercial building,” San Diego Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Mónica Muñoz said.
Metro Arson Strike Team investigators responded to the blaze and determine it was an arson and involved an outbuilding at the cemetery, said San Diego police Sgt. Rick Pechin. Investigators were checking if there was any video they could review.
When Jeri Whooley s mother, Geraldine Immediato, died in 2014, the family was able to hold a funeral service within two days at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery and Funeral Home in Avondale.
This year, when her father, Lou, passed away on Jan. 1, she was unable to schedule his burial service for two weeks. That’s incredible to have to wait that long to start putting everything to rest, she said.
The burial delay comes as large numbers of COVID-19 deaths are putting pressure and stress on Arizona funeral homes. Across the state, beginning in December, COVID-19 deaths have spiked to far higher than summer s peak rates.
