Sentara Healthcare and Cone Health represent the latest in a series of scuttled merger proposals, but it isn t expected to slow M&A activity, industry observers said.
Sentara and Cone abandoned their plans Wednesday to build a more than $11 billion system spanning North Carolina to Virginia amidst internal opposition as well as criticism from community members and state regulators. Around a dozen proposed mergers between relatively healthy not-for-profit systems haven t closed over the past three years as doctors have protested and regulators have become increasingly wary of consolidation. I do think it s reflective of this new attitude toward consolidation in healthcare where more than ever, enforcers are suspicious of systems that are growing and skeptical of the benefits they claim they ll bring, said Ken Field, an attorney with Jones Day who works on healthcare antitrust and competition issues. Governor Dan McKee
Governor Dan McKee will be hosting a community conversation on Thursday.
The online discussions are designed to help develop a vision and strategy for a more resilient, prosperous, and equitable Rhode Island.
McKee has initiated this series of virtual community conversations in order to discuss Rhode Island s recovery and future especially given the expected arrival of significant federal stimulus funding.
Participating will be Lt. Governor Sabina Matos, Secretary of Commerce Stefan Pryor, and Department of Administration Director James Thorsen.
The conversation is featured on health and will feature remarks from McKee a followed by a presentation from Dr. Megan Ranney, Director, Brown-Lifespan Center for Digital Health and Warren Alpert Endowed Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, Brown University.
PROVIDENCE Gov. Dan McKee has appointed Richard Charest, the former president and CEO of Landmark Medical Center, to head the troubled agency that runs the state s last resort hospital for patients with severe medical and psychiatric disorders.
McKee will submit Charest s name to the Senate for confirmation as the new director of the Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals.
“We are confident that Richard’s decades of experience in the health care field have prepared him to lead this department which provides vital services and support to some of Rhode Island’s most vulnerable populations, McKee said Wednesday.
PROVIDENCE The McKee administration has enlisted the help of the Hospital Association of Rhode Island and Care New England in evaluating the quality of patient care at the embattled state-run Eleanor Slater Hospital.
The two outside organizations will provide a peer review of the clinical and operational programs at Eleanor Slater Hospital focused on patient safety, quality of care and efficiency, according to a late-day statement by the agency that runs the state hospital.
This review is expected to take 60 days.
In a related development, Gov. Dan McKee told reporters on Tuesday that he anticipates an announcement by the end of the week on his choice of a replacement for Kathryn Power, who resigned mid-controversy as director of the state Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals. (She cited the illness of a family member as her reason for resigning at the time.)
