Al Roker of NBC’s Today Show fame, will discuss his passion, interest and concerns about climate change, as well as his storied career as keynote speaker at Operation Sierra Storm, the annual television meteorologists’ conference at Lake Tahoe. The public is invited to tune in via Facebook to watch Roker on Monday, January 25.
Operation Sierra Storm (OSS) in an annual weather conference held on the South Shore. Due to health and safety restrictions, the public is unable to attend Monday s event in person, but they are welcome to participate via Facebook.

The Tahoe Fund recently announced its support of the SOS Outreach program with a $30,000 grant to expand its impact at Lake Tahoe.
SOS Outreach is a nonprofit that provides opportunities for underserved youth to experience the outdoors while participating in a mentorship program that is designed to prepare them for life’s challenges.
Every winter, kids who would not normally have the opportunity, enjoy five ride days at Northstar or Heavenly Mountain Resort with their mentors. Off the slopes, they engage in social service projects that help improve their local community.
In Tahoe, more than 250 kids learn to ski and snowboard, learn leadership skills and the importance of protecting the environment through service projects each year. In the summer months they learn to fly fish, river raft and mountain bike.

As regions across California grapple with restrictions on commerce and travel during the coronavirus pandemic, one destination has remained open all winter: Lake Tahoe’s ski areas.
The Tahoe region was allowed to reopen outdoor dining and hotels earlier this week, just in time for Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, a popular time for skiing. However, a state travel advisory implores people to avoid driving more than 120 miles from home, which puts Tahoe out of range for Bay Area residents. The advisory also asks that out-of-state travelers self-quarantine for 10 days upon arrival. For anyone who lives closer to Tahoe or has met those requirements, skiing this weekend is a possibility.

In South Lake Tahoe, the California-Nevada state border cuts the town in half. Here, the state border is not a highway sign welcoming you to California or Nevada. Rather, it’s a loud, obvious convergence of casinos, crowds, traffic, hotels, nightclubs, a ski resort, tourist gift shops and breweries.
