CORNWALL, Ontario – The Cornwall and Area Housing Corporation are assisting roughly 1,500 individuals or families who have experienced homelessness or are at risk of homelessness with another 582 households on their wait list to receive rent geared to income housing.
Meena Mullur, the City of Cornwall’s Housing Program Supervisor, acknowledged that the issue of homelessness in the region may have gotten worse during the pandemic.
“Our most recent data on homelessness is from 2018 which may not be reflective of the current homelessness issues and factors in our area,” said Mullur in an email to

CORNWALL – Not one geared-to-income apartment building but two are being built in Cornwall this year.
The City of Cornwall will be able to accelerate its build of a social housing complex on Ninth Street this year – the first of its kind in roughly a decade.

When I sat down to speak with Mayor Bernadette Clement at the end of 2020, she said that one of her top files for 2021 would be housing in the City of Cornwall. This makes sense, and it is going to become a big issue very quickly. When tackling the issue of housing, something that should not be lost in the shuffle is affordable housing for our seniors and those in need.
There is going to be a need to build a lot of homes to meet the demand that currently exists in this city and the surrounding area. People want to live here, but we should not forget about those who already do, and might be on a long waiting list for a home.
