Communities in the Southeast Fire Centre are getting grants to help combat and mitigate wildfires.
“Across the Kootenays, one of the biggest draws is that we get to live next to nature,” said Nelson-Creston MLA Brittny Anderson. “Unfortunately, that can mean our homes and communities are at greater wildfire risk. By supporting these projects, we are making sure people will be protected by a community-led response in the case of a wildfire.”
Projects in the Southeast Fire Centre include:
$204,620 to Creston Valley Forest Corporation
$184,070 to Harrop-Procter Community Co-operative
$260,505 to Kaslo and District Community Forest Society

It’s been a year since the COVID-19 pandemic changed the course of daily life locally, statewide, and the country.
Pella Area Community and Economic Alliance Executive Director Karen Eischen says after widespread closures to schools, businesses, non-profit organizations, and events she remains optimistic that a corner has been turned and the upcoming traditional busy season locally will be stronger in 2021 than 2020.
The PACE Alliance is currently planning for a return of Thursdays in Pella this summer, starting in June.
The Iowa Finance Authority announced this week the availability of an eligibility precheck for the new Iowa Rent and Utility Assistance Program, which will begin accepting full applications later this month.
Pella Area Community and Economic Alliance Executive Director Karen Eischen says the program will provide financial assistance to eligible COVID-19 impacted Iowans for rent and utility costs for a period of up to 12 months. She says renters in need of assistance are encouraged to take the new Iowa Rent and Utility Assistance program’s eligibility precheck to determine if they meet the initial eligibility criteria, and if eligible, to sign-up to receive notification when the full application is available.
