The council will likely vote to adopt the resolution at its Feb. 17 meeting. The resolution will rename the portion of the street between Broadway and Avenue C as Edith Ferrell Way. The Flournoy Gethers VFW Post #7470 is on that part of the street, where Ferrell was Auxiliary President. Her contributions to the city are being honored.

COVID-19 vaccinations continue despite snow

Despite Winter Storm Orlena, vaccinations have continued. Davis himself drove staff and residents to Bayonne Medical Center during the snowstorm. On Feb. 1, Davis helped shuttle BMC staff and Bayonne Board of Education nurses to the hospital to distribute vaccines. The nurses have been assisting in the “all hands on deck” effort to vaccinate as many residents as possible.

The snowfall exceeded initial estimates of 18 inches, marking the first snow of 2021. While most of the snow fell on Sunday into Monday, Feb.1, the National Weather Service extended the Winter Storm Warning until 6 a.m. on Feb. 2. Orlena was over, and snow removal was underway by Feb. 3. Residents are stymied by where to put the shoveled snow. Mayor James Davis urged residents not to shovel it into the street.

Hudson Reporter × The hallways of Bayonne High School may soon be filled again as the school district looks to return to classrooms. Though virtual instruction will continue at Bayonne public schools until the end of February, Superintendent of Schools John Niesz said returning to classrooms is a possibility.  The district continues to evaluate COVID-19 data to determine if it’s safe to transition to a hybrid or in-person instruction plan. The district announced in July that public schools would remain virtual through the first month of the school year. In September, the decision was made to remain virtual until Nov. 2, the end of the first marking period. In October, virtual instruction was extended to Dec. 1. In November, it was extended until Jan. 29.

The Bayonne Board of Education approved new contracts with the school district’s educators and paraprofessionals at the Jan. 5 meeting. The first contract, for educators, was for the next four years. Board President Maria Valado said the contract was approved by the Bayonne Education Association (BEA), formerly the Bayonne Teachers Association, prior to the expiration of the current contract. “We value our teachers, and we are so happy we were able to have a contract six months before the current contract expired,” Valado said.
