The Twin Cedars Girls Track and Field Squad finished 8th at the class 1A State Qualifying Meet on Thursday. While the Sabers did not get any automatic qualifiers to state, Coach Cam Parker told KNIA/KRLS Sports that Rylee Dunkin could be at large in three events. She finished 2nd in the 3000, 3rd in the 1500, and 2nd in the 800.
The Melcher-Dallas Track and Field Squads ran for spots at the state meet at Madrid on Thursday. The girls finished in 9th place overall. No Saints were able to secure an automatic bid to the state meet, however Grace Overgaard put herself in position in the shot put, but once again breaking her own school record by throwing 38-4. That throw was good enough for 2nd place. She also hopes to qualify for the discus as well. On the track, J’Lyn Knutson, who has been battling a hip injury, gutted out 3rd place in the 3000 and will see if her time is good enough for an at-large spot at the State Meet. She finished a disappointing 7th in the 1500.
The Twin Cedars Track and Field Squads head to Madrid this Thursday for the class 1A State Qualifier. The Saber girls are confident they have some events and individuals that can qualify for the Blue Oval. Coach Cam Parker tells KNIA/KRLS Sports he has been spending the last couple of weeks getting his best athletes in the right events to give them the best chance.
Parker:
“Looking at times, and we have been. We’re trying to put our girls in the best event they can be in and hopefully they’ll give their best effort on Thursday.”
Parker adds he has seen some of the teams that are at the state qualifier like Bluegrass Conference opponents Ankeny Christian, and Melcher-Dallas. He says they were able to get a look at several of the teams when they went to the Colo-NESCO Invitational earlier in the season.
The Twin Cedars Boys and Girls Track and Field Squads head to the Colo-NESCO Invitational for a meet tonight. The meet will be hosted at Nevada High School. Coach Cam Parker has several athletes to choose from on the girls squad. One athlete who has impressed so far is Cheyenne Bruns. He says Bruns got off to a great start in the first meet of the season and that set the tone for the rest of the team and season.
Parker:
“Never looked back and she came back and ran the open 400 and ran the anchor of the shuttle hurdles team coming back to win at the very end. She has that confidence and she wants to always get ahead.”
