Plans to revive dormant industrial fishing zone in Madang - Pacific Beat

Download 5.52 MB Papua New Guinea s National Fisheries Authority says China and Japan have expressed interest in setting up large tuna canneries on Madang s northern coast as it launches a bid to take back a $122 million project. Fisheries minister Dr Lino Tom said he expected the Pacific Marine Industrial Zone (PMIZ) to be transferred back to the NFA in a matter of weeks. Plans to develop the marine industrial hub were first announced in 2004 with a promise of creating up to 30,000 jobs and generating K2 billion in economic activity each year. But the project stalled as disputes broke out between national government departments over who should manage the development.
