Palm Coast rally shows support for Cuban protesters

Laurie Hahn PALM COAST A group of mostly Cuban-Americans gathered in Central Park Thursday evening to show support for the protesters in Cuba demanding democratic reforms. “We’re here to speak up for them, doing for them what they can’t do for themselves without risking their life,” said Raquel Levy, a Cuban-American personal injury attorney in Palm Coast. “I was fortunate enough to be born here, but there’s still a part of our heart that hurts because we know what our family went through and it’s the same thing that these people are going through.” Demonstrations began in Cuba around July 11 in response to deteriorating living conditions, lack of basic goods and services, and the increase in coronavirus cases. Since then at least one death has been reported and many people are believed to be missing.

Harry Johnston, ex-congressman and Fla Senate president, dead at 89

Harry Johnston, a lifelong West Palm Beach resident who spent two decades shaping public policy as a congressman and state senator and helped form and lead some of the area’s most prominent civic institutions, died Monday at 89. During a political career that spanned a period of explosive South Florida growth, Johnston oversaw the creation of the state’s Growth Management Act and passage of legislation to form the Children’s Services Council of Palm Beach County and kick-start efforts to build the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. A fifth-generation Floridian, Johnston rose to key political roles at the state, federal and international level, serving as state Senate President in the 1980s, as chairman of the U.S. House’s African affairs subcommittee in the 1990s and eventually as President Bill Clinton’s special envoy to Sudan.

John Fischer, former School Board member, has died, district says

3 hours ago Share Fischer was known throughout the school district as a voice of support for children, staff and teachers. John Fischer, who served on the Flagler County School Board from 2010 to 2014, has died, Flagler Schools reported on Twitter on May 14. He was a dynamo of positivity, attending events in his suit and tie throughout the district on a daily basis even after he was no longer on the School Board. During his tenure on the board, he helped institute the school uniform policy, encouraging students to Dress for success. He was also a devout man of faith. School Board Chairman Trevor Tucker said in a Flagler Schools tweet: You couldn t find a bigger cheerleader for our kids, teachers, staff, and administrators in all of Flagler County.
