Former NFL Player and WSU Alum to Speak at Commencement
April 6, 2021
OGDEN, Utah – Former NFL and Weber State University football star, Ta’u Pupu’a, who is now performing opera on stages around the world, will be the honored speaker during WSU’s virtual spring commencement exercise April 29 at 7 p.m. The presentation can be viewed at weber.edu/commencement.
Individual college graduation ceremonies, where each graduate will be recognized individually, will be held in person at Stewart Stadium on April 30 and May 1. For more information, visit weber.edu/commencement.
Pupu’a is a world renowned operatic tenor whose unconventional path to a prestigious singing career included a detour courtesy of the NFL. He grew up in Utah after his family moved to Salt Lake City from the Kingdom of Tonga when he was 5. A football scholarship paved his way to attend Weber State University in the ’90s, where he planned to get his bachelor of music degree.

When police found two bongs in Joelene Andriea Hemara’s Gladstone house, she insisted they belonged to someone else.
Police conducted a search warrant at Caincross St, Sun Valley, when Hemara was not home. They contacted her by phone and she declared a used syringe in the bedroom cupboard.
Police located 0.4g of marijuana, an Ice Break bottle fashioned into a water pipe and a beer bottle with a glass pipe infused into the side, along with the syringe.
When spoken to, Hemara said the bongs belonged to someone else, however she was aware the items were in the house.
The operations were against smuggling of wildlife, antiques, drugs, narcotic substances and currency
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and its sister agencies participated in 11 international operations, during which 18 significant seizures of banned articles were made in 2019-20.
Under the aegis of the World Customs Organisation, the agency took part in the operations against the smuggling of wildlife, hazardous wastes, ozone-depleting substances, antiques, drugs, narcotic and psychotropic substances and currency.
The DRI also steered Operation Sesha-III in November-December last year, against the smuggling of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora-listed species of timber, which was the first ever global Customs enforcement operation sponsored by India.
