Amanda Gorman said she was tailed by a security guard on Friday who thought she looked “suspicious,” calling attention to the racist “reality” of how Black women and girls are treated.
“A security guard tailed me on my walk home tonight. He demanded if I lived there because ‘you look suspicious.’ I showed my keys & buzzed myself into my building. He left, no apology,” Gorman tweeted. “This is the reality of black girls: One day you’re called an icon, the next day, a threat.”

NEW YORK (AP) â Poet Amanda Gorman says a security guard racially profiled her while she was walking home Friday night.
The 22-year-old captured hearts at President Joe Bidenâs inauguration.
She tweeted that the guard followed her home and demanded to know where she lives because she âlooked suspicious.â A spokeswoman for Gorman didnât immediately return an email Saturday seeking additional comment.

The 21-year-old was signed alongside the Inauguration Poet Amanda Gorman to IMG Models last month, the same agency that counts Gigi Hadid, Kate Moss and Gisele Bundchen on its books.

On Thursday, she walked in the socially-distanced video presentation for Proenza Schouler, saying beforehand: I definitely lost a little sleep the night before. I mean, I’m walking for the first time, I’m in a professional environment for the first time… It was a very epic first experience with the fashion world.

“It’s so nice to have a president with a soul again. The previous one sold his to the devil and didn’t even get Georgia out of the deal,” Colbert joked.
Colbert continued to recount the day’s events. For instance, he remarked that Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, look like “a presidential couple holding hands in a way that doesn’t look contractually mandated.”
Later, after playing a clip of Lady Gaga singing the national anthem, when she reached “and the flag was still there,” Colbert said: “And surprise! The flag was still there! Rarely is that song a cliffhanger, but just two weeks ago, in that spot, it was in danger of being replaced by a Rambo photoshop.” Colbert was of course referencing the violent, deadly seditious riot the previous president incited in a thankfully failed attempt to overturn the 2020 election.
