The Michigan Department of Treasury is reminding Michiganders that the deadline for state and federal income taxes is May 17.
With a week left until the deadline, accountants say it’s important to get all their documents in order quickly to file on time.
Professional Tax Service in Traverse City says they’ve seen an increase in tax drop-offs and phone or zoom calls with their clients in order to meet their needs amidst the pandemic. They say there is still time to file an extension until Oct. 15, but you won’t be off the hook for any money you owe.

As the State of Michigan reaches the 55% first-dose vaccination milestone, Leelanau County has reached the first dose 70% mark.
The Benzie-Leelanau Health Department says as they strive to get everyone their second shot, they are moving away from large vaccine clinics. They say they are going for smaller pop-up clinics like the one held last Friday at Farm Club.
The Health Department says this change was made because they’d begun to see a drop off in demand for the vaccine, as all of the eager people have already gotten their shots.
“Now, to the rest of the population that maybe doesn’t find it as convenient to do that or maybe they’re not as motivated to do that. So we’re taking the vaccine out to where the people are, or they gather, and where we might just run into people who are maybe on the fence, maybe need some questions answered, or maybe just don’t have the time or the inclination to schedule an appointment and go get vaccinated them

The Dockside Restaurant in Torch Lake celebrated their spring fling fundraiser Monday, raising money for the Grass River Natural Area.
Half of all food and drink proceeds went to GRNA programs, which include summer camps along with paddling and wildlife activities.
Grass River says they’ve held this event for more than 20 years, and even with limited capacity and extra take-out orders, they’re still impressed by the response from the community.
“We are just so thankful for all the folks that come out and help support us through programs, through events like this, the Dockside, the folks who are coming out and just putting money in the jar,” said Jenn Wright, Executive Director of Grass River Natural Area. “All of those funds are very, very appreciated and very well used.”

Wexford-Osceola Habitat For Humanity Helping Move Home

An individual who lives downstate wanted to build their dream home at their Lake City lakefront property, so instead of demolishing their old house, they donated it.
Crews lifted the house off its foundation, and now, it’s waiting for a buyer.
At first, Habitat for Humanity thought about relocating the home for a Habitat family, but decided to sell it and try to help several families.
“Because this isn’t a typical habitat house, we wanted to figure out how we could do the most work with this donation,” said Amy Gibbs, Executive Director for the Wexford-Osceola Habitat for Humanity. “So we’re gonna sell the house and use all the proceeds that we make on the sale to repair and build safe and affordable housing for other habitat families.”
