Then, in the 1840s, industry rose to dominance as salt, coal, and machinery pulled labor from the farms to the towns. This continued well into the modern era, with our industry supporting half a dozen war efforts. But today, with industry generally on the decline, the question on quite a few people’s minds is where to look next. What will bring new jobs to Mason County? What will keep our young people here? What will generate real revenue to support our schools and roads? It’s simple, really. Tourism.

Fort Ligonier receives museum association award for innovative fundraiser

Fort Ligonier’s Cannon Ball Online Auction and Party to Go received a 2021 Special Achievement Award from PA Museums, an independent statewide museum association that supports the Pennsylvania museum community. Usually an in-person event, the Cannon Ball was restructured in September due to pandemic gathering restrictions. It featured an online auction of items such as print No. 2 of Chas Fagan’s painting, “Flash Point,” and packaged hors d’oeuvres by Vallozzi’s. Fort staff dressed in period clothing to provide curbside pickup service of Party to Go packages on Sept. 18.

Ross Farm Fixes Up Property During Pandemic, Now Offering Sleigh Rides

The Ross Farm Heritage Museum is doing its best to navigate through challenges the pandemic has presented. The museum was forced to shut down for six months last year and has seen a significant drop in the number of visitors due to COVID-19 protocols. Communications Officer Matthew Gates says pre-pandemic they would see up to 200 visits each weekend but now are limited to 50 per day. For special events that number could go as high as 600 to 1,200 people. “Probably one of the areas the pandemic has impacted us the most would be in our programming and interpretation as we have always been a very hands-on museum where people get to touch and feel and would get to try their hand at doing many of the things that were common on a farm like this 200 years ago,” he explained. “So,  of course, we have had to remove much of the hands-on experience in order to create a safe experience for everyone during this time.
