Balko encompasses two major buildings, the first building, the Stone Cottage was built in 1925 to initially serve as a retreat for Eleanor Roosevelt and her two political mentors, nancy cook and marion dickerman. It was built on the eastern end of the roosevelt property at the time, land that fdr had purchased in 1911 to do forestry experiment on. By the early 1920s, she was getting very active in political life. She really needed her own space to bring friends and associates, have a place where she could talk politics and plan political strategy. Fdr realized the big house really didnt serve Eleanor Roosevelt purposes well, because that was her motherinlaws house and choose to save it for to say that for 40 years, she was just a visitor there. It was important for her to have her own space where she could really do things that she was interested in and not have to worry about whether or not her motherinlaw had to give her permission to do this or that in her motherinlaws home. Brought to the Hoover Library by cspan in partnership with mediacom. The curator shows us the additional artifacts that accompany each of the portraits. Today we are at the Herbert Hoover president ial library in west branch, iowa. We are in the museum portion of the building. This is our temporary exhibit, which is cspans american president s life portraits. The idea for this came about from thinking about bringing the temporary exhibit from cspan. And then adding something personal from each man to show Something Different about them. We think of them as about the president s, but we want to show them as human beings as well. And that is an interesting aspect. Some of these guys were very interesting. To borrow the objects, it was an extensive process trying to find sites associated with the different people and getting them to agree to loan us items. Wednesday will start dry but well increase cloud cover through the day and see an afternoon rain and wintry mix scattered across the state. Thursday is looking warm enough that most of our precipitation should fall mainly as rain with highs in the upper 30s. Friday looks fairly warm, but i think well see more of a mix between rain showers and a wintry mix. Saturday is looking cold but i also think well see accumulating snowfall in the morning.
