Fracked Gas: Plans to Import through Cork Harbour Shelved

Cork Harbour Information It’s one of the largest natural harbours in the world – and those living near Cork Harbour insist that it’s also one of the most interesting. This was the last port of call for the most famous liner in history, the Titanic, but it has been transformed into a centre for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. The harbour has been a working port and a strategic defensive hub for centuries, and it has been one of Ireland s major employment hubs since the early 1900s. Traditional heavy industries have waned since the late 20th century, with the likes of the closure of Irish Steel in Haulbowline and shipbuilding at Verolme. It still has major and strategic significance in energy generation, shipping and refining.

Fáilte Ireland and Google Partner to Map Ireland s Historic Beauty

Google Trekker comes to Wicklow. By R. Bryan Willits, Editorial Assistant Irish tourist board Fáilte Ireland is partnering with Google to bring images of some of Ireland’s most beautiful and historic places to Google Street View for the first time. Using Google’s new “Trekker Loan” program, Fáilte Ireland will focus on ‘Ireland’s Ancient East,’ capturing images of medieval towns, the grounds of stately homes, and places like Newgrange. Trekker has also already been to Clonmacnoise, Wicklow’s Historic Gaol, The Hill of Tara, The Rock of Cashel, and Glendalough Visitor Centre. “Trekker Loan” allows nonprofits, universities, research organizations, and tourism boards like Fáilte Ireland to join the program in order to gather images of places heretofore not captured for Google Street View due to their remoteness or inaccessibility.

Ireland s incredible landscape – and why its bad weather is great for photographers

Dusk in the narrow streets of Dingle. A fine drizzle is falling from the dark sky and the damp is crawling into clothes and buildings. The sweet smell of turf fires is hanging in the air and gulls are crying in the distance. This was some 30 years ago and is one of my earliest memories of Ireland. In this moment I felt like I had come home. However, it took another decade until I settled in Ireland for good and started my career as a photographer and writer. Ireland: Discover Its Beauty is my eighth book with O’Brien Press. Together we did books on Ireland’s Coast, Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland’s Ancient East and the River Shannon but we never thought about doing the most obvious, a book about Ireland. And this was exactly the question publisher Michael O’Brien asked me during one of our conversations: “Why did we never do a book about Ireland?” At that moment it was as good as settled.

Bucket list experiences waiting for you in Ireland

Comments The Irish tradition of ‘Céad Míle Fáilte - a hundred thousand welcomes - is known the world over. While travel is on pause for the moment, the traditional Irish welcome is sure to be extra warm once we can all be together again, especially diving into these unique experiences across the island of Ireland. With one in five Canadians claiming Irish ancestry, it s little wonder that so many are dreaming of their next trip to Ireland. When the time is right, Tourism Ireland will be ready to help guide visitors from Canada on their trip to Ireland, whether it’s your first visit or your 101st.
