With the string of new initiatives rolled out for artists and creatives, the UAE will soon transform into a global centre for culture and the ‘safest’ hub for talent in the world, expats have said. For experts, these programmes would provide creatives with the opportunity to make a livelihood out of their passion.
On Saturday, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, announced the launch of the Dubai Creative Economy Strategy to boost the value of the city’s creative sector, aiming to generate more jobs and doubling the number of companies in the industry.

The town laid out its ambitions in #BrilliantBarrow, the title given to its bid to the Government’s Towns Fund with development plans under the themes of regeneration, skills and enterprise, and infrastructure and connectivity. It worked, with Barrow becoming one of the first towns to secure £25 million from the fund. Councillor Ann Thomson, the leader of Barrow Borough Council, describes the successful bid as “a pivotal moment for our borough and all those who live and work here”. Titled Of Life and Love, first-time author Kiona Assing s book has been issued.
The poetry book was launched in Tobago on Friday last week at the Magdalena Grand Beach and Golf Resort after readings at the House of Creative People in Marabella on March 21 and the Maloney Public Library on March 25.
Speaking with Newsday, Assing, who uses the pen name Abby Kay, said the book delves into a spectrum of emotions, “From your highest highs to your lowest lows..everything that has been experienced in the book has been filtered through a lens of strong emotions and love; whether it s platonic love all the way up to romantic love and its separated into two segments: life and love.”
