Spending a Night in the Infamous Paster Noster Lighthouse

The Pastor Noster lighthouse
There are secluded hotels, and then there’s this: Pater Noster is a mythical lighthouse (known as ‘king of lighthouses’ to locals) that occupies the tiny island of Hamneskär off the western coast of Sweden. The wild and dangerous waters that surround Hamneskär have been feared for centuries sailors would recite The Lord’s Prayer (or Pater Noster in Latin) when their ships approached. The lighthouse was first built in 1868 and, although the island was considered barren and uninhabitable, a home for the lighthouse master was built the same year; the lighthouse and lighthouse master’s home are still the only structures on the island.

Located on the remote, windblown island of Hamneskär, outside Marstrand on the Swedish west coast, the isolated home of a lighthouse master has become one of Scandinavia’s most sought after destinations. With the lighthouse dating back to 1868 overlooking the hazardous waters surrounding the tiny island, the name Pater Noster which translates to the Lord’s Prayer in Latin was given in tribute to the sailors’ prayers for safety. For almost 110 years, generations of lighthouse keepers have lived with their families in the extreme environment, caring for the lighthouse, rescuing shipwrecked sailors, and forming the small, isolated society. Now, a group of Swedish entrepreneurs, hoteliers, restaurateurs, designers, and professional sailors have given it a second life, creating nine guestrooms, a restaurant, bar, and outdoor cafe.
